What is Database Tycoon?
In May of 2024, I wrote an article about how I was quitting my job and starting a freelance data consulting business. One of the earliest lessons I learned in freelancing is that I didn’t want to do it alone. I knew I could be a more effective engineer if I had a supportive team, so I set out to build one. Fast forward eight months, and this small freelance operation has grown into a thriving consulting agency with a growing team of 10+ incredible engineers and managers.

A serverless architecture that uses DuckDB and SQLMesh to run pipelines entirely in-memory, using open-source platforms.

We support flexible working styles - Team members do their best work when they choose where it’s done. Database Tycoon doesn’t have an office and we never will. Our team works remotely from wherever they call home. We also work on flexible schedules.
I’m glad I made the choice early on to grow the team, and I’m proud of what we’ve already accomplished. Now as I look ahead to 2025, I’m excited to keep growing and gain more types of projects for the team.
